Walking in the Trossachs

The trossachs is a haven for all kinds of walking - hillwalking, woodland walks, abandoned railway lines. The following is a short index to some of the walks available:  (Approximate  locations shown on Walksmap)

A ) Very easy, suitable for occasional walkers. Level roads or grass track

  1. Two bridges very short Callander town walk
  2. Riverside short walk from Callander
  3. Callander meadows about 3½ miles flat track / pavement
  4. Lower Crags - easy walking in woodland at Callander
  5. Glenfinglas Dam - a short stroll to a spectacular view
  6. Loch Tay shore walk (Killin) about 2½ miles grassland
  7. Glen Lochay (Killin) about 5 miles tarmac gentle slopes
  8. Cashel Woodland Walks A series of walks in conservation woodlands

B ) Medium, for fairly regular walkers

  1. Bracklinn Falls and Upper Crags about 4 miles with steep rough track on second stage
  2. Sron a Chlachain (Killin) only 1 mile or so but steep rough grassland / heather tracks
  3. Acharn Woods (Killin) 5 miles over forest tracks. Some steep.
  4. Acharn & GlenOgle (Killin) 8 miles over forest tracks. Some steep.
  5. Creag an Tuirc  (Balquhidder) 1½ miles forest track & some rough track. 500ft
  6. Ben Gullipen from A81 3 mile or 6 mile. 1400 feet. Forest track, sometimes steep.
  7. Killin Junctn& GlenOgle 10 miles forest tracks, some gentle climbs
  8. Auchlyne & Killin Jnctn 11 miles tarmac and forest track. Fairly level
  9. Conic Hill (Loch Lomond east side) 3 miles but very steep steps in places

C ) Harder walks - Strenuous & steep

These are serious climbs in exposed areas - do not undertake lightly - especially in winter conditions.

  1. Ben Ledi - * 5 miles, 2800 ft. forest / hill tracks. rough stony/ peat. Strenuous
  2. Kirkton Glen to Glen Dochart  - * 7 m one way / 14 m return. Forest track/steep hill track
  3. Bein an t-Sithean (Shian)  - * 2 miles / 1500 ft. Rough track / open hillside, Strenuous
  4. Ben Vorlich* 10 mile circular walk, 4 - 5 hr. Add 2 hours if also attempting Stuc a Chroin, Strenuous .
  5. Ben A'an - * 2 miles / 1500 ft, rough track / rocky scramble. Strenuous
  6. Ben Venue - * 5 or 7 mile. forest track / open hill track. wet. strenuous
  7. Ben Lomond- * 7 miles, 3250 ft.   hill tracks / open hillside. Strenuous
  8. The Cobbler (Ben Arthur) 5.5 miles, 2946 ft. Steep scrambles, rocky, care required. Strenuous
  9. Ben Lawers - * 5 miles, 4046 ft.    conservation tracks,   unmarked hill tracks. Strenuous
